What is Breathwork?

"One breath session is equivalent to 2 years of therapy" - Dr Henry Smith-Rohrberg

The Power of the Breath

The breath nourishes us in every moment — an unceasing force that keeps us alive. It fuels our movement and function, powers our thoughts and creativity, and reveals our physical, mental, and emotional states.

The quality of your breathing determines the quality of your life.

Breathwork: A Bridge Between the Conscious and Unconscious

Breathing is one of the few bodily functions that can be both involuntary and fully conscious. This gives us an incredible opportunity to use the breath as a tool for healing, awareness, and transformation.

Intentional breathwork can:

  • Clear your mind
  • Calm your nervous system
  • Settle your stomach
  • Open your heart
  • Unwind chronic tension
  • Support behavioral change
  • Expand consciousness

It all begins with a simple rhythm: Inhale into the belly, into the chest, and exhale out.
This three-part breath is the foundation of many breathwork practices and begins to circulate energy through the body.

What is Conscious Connected Breathing?

Also known as circular breathing, this technique is done entirely through the mouth — deeper and faster than normal breathing, and without any pause between the inhale and exhale.

This breathing pattern:

  • Reduces CO₂ in the body
  • Alkalizes the blood
  • Alters brainwave states

A key effect is something called transient hypofrontality— a temporary deactivation of the frontal lobe. This is the part of the brain responsible for the ego, mental chatter, and your inner critic. When it quiets down, you gain heightened access to:

  • Intuition
  • Inner wisdom
  • Deep personal truth

Breathwork for Emotional Healing: Breathwork is a powerful tool for emotional integration.

In a single session, you can begin to:

  • Release stored emotions and traumas
  • Clear stress from the sympathetic nervous system
  • Improve vagal tone and heart rate variability
  • Activate the parasympathetic nervous system — your body’s natural state of rest, repair, and deep relaxation

What to Expect in a Session

  • Lie down in a private, comfortable space — in-person or online
  • Breathe: inhale into the belly, into the chest, exhale out — repeat
  • A dynamic soundtrack supports your journey and emotional release
  • The active breath lasts for 25–30 minutes
  • You are fully guided and supported throughout
  • It’s powerful, profound, and safe
  • It may feel intense at first — but remember: you’ve done more challenging things than lying on the floor breathing

Common Physical Sensations

You may experience:

  • Tingling in the hands, feet, or face
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Muscle tightness in the hands or jaw
  • Altered states of consciousness
  • Emotional releases such as crying, laughter, or shaking

All of this is completely normal. Your body is simply releasing what it’s been holding.

"The primary intent of consciously connected breathing is the activation and accumulation of Presence and present moment awareness through the integration of the unconscious emotional blockages that inhibit our current experiences."

- Michael Brown

Breathwork Considerations: Breathwork can lead to an intense physical and emotional release. Therefore, it is not advised for persons with:

  • History of cardiovascular disease, including angina or heart attack
  • High blood pressure
  • Glaucoma or retinal detachment
  • Osteoporosis
  • Recent significant physical injuries or surgery
  • Severe mental illness
  • Seizure disorders or neurological conditions
  • Use of major medications
  • Personal or family history of aneurysms

If you fall under any of these categories, we strongly advise against participating in breathwork. Pregnant women are also advised to consult their primary care physician before practising breathwork, and individuals with asthma should bring their inhalers and consult both their physician and the Breathwork class facilitator.
